Advocating for Ourselves

Policy & Advocacy

Our organization leads immigrant justice advocacy at both state and national levels. We host workshops to empower members and connect them with legislators. As part of national networks like FIRM and NPNA, we link local leaders to the broader movement for immigration reform. We also build strong alliances with African American communities, faith groups, LGBTQ movements, and labor organizations, recognizing that justice must be intersectional. Together, we support efforts on incarceration reform, environmental justice, Medicare expansion, and voting rights, while fostering accountability with officials, police, and local institutions across Alabama.

Civic Participation

ACIJ was established in the wake of HB 56 in 2011, when immigrants were targeted at our homes, jobs, and schools. From that moment on, we have worked to nurture the civic life of our communities. We want everyone to know that, regardless of their immigration status, they have civic rights and are important members of the social fabric of our state.

We are engaging immigrant communities in the most important civic duties, from registering to vote, voting locally and nationally, completing the census, and being active in our neighborhoods, towns, and schools.
