Community Participation Fellow

​

The Community Participation Fellow will help ACIJ reach community members in 10 target counties and across the state via text banking, mailers, forums, community events and canvassing. They will work with ACIJ Organizers, to define and develop concrete action plans that will affect community participation and voter turnout in the November election. They will report back lessons learned and lift community needs to the leadership council to identify positive solutions to critical issues in their communities. This is a seasonal position that will end in December 2022.

Responsibilities:

ACIJ Campaign Work

  • Represent ACIJ at local events by tabling and handing out relevant materials, such as Voter registration, ACIJ volunteering information, and Know Your Rights materials

  • Lead Coordination of Power of Participation Workshops

  • Coordinate volunteers as needed for special events, tabling, and workshops.

  • Report to the Executive Director weekly detailing work over the previous week 

 

Community Organizing

  • Build relationships of trust with local organizational, religious, and business leaders in the Birmingham immigrant community, and deepen these partners’ participation in immigrant justice issues.

  • Meet regularly with members on a one-to-one and group basis to keep them updated and involved in current initiatives

Qualifications:

  • Passion around instances of injustice and a desire to make local change in communities

  • Experience organizing groups of people around a singular goal

  • Experience in following diversity and inclusion/anti-racism policies and practices; applying equity lens to organizational practices and culture

  • A strong work ethic and the persistence to fight through setbacks

  • Initiative to complete tasks and necessary preparation independently

  • Ability to work with a diverse group of people from a wide array of cultural, religious, and linguistic backgrounds 

  • Proficiency in English and Spanish a plus

  • Ability to work frequent nights and weekends as needed

 

Compensation & Next Steps:

The Community Participation Fellowship is a part-time independent contractor position with a $1200 monthly stipend.  Fellows will be expected to work 20 hours a week.
